Alleppey

The alluring Alappuzha with its lovely lakes, lagoons and the fresh water rivers will not fail to sweep you off your feet. The stunningly gorgeous 'Venice of the East' has more than the boat races, houseboats, beaches, marine products and the coir industry….

Alappuzha, formerly known as Alleppey, is one of the not-to-be-missed backwater destinations in Kerala. Caressed by the Arabian Sea and interlocked by a number of canals and bridges, this gorgeously beautiful 'Venice of the East’ is home to diverse animal and bird life. Alleppey was one of the busiest centers of trade in the past with one of the best-known ports along the Malabar Coast. Even today it retains its charm as the centre for Coir carpet industries and prawn farming.

part from its exotic backwater locations, Alappuzha is famous for the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race that takes place during the month of August-September in Punnamada Lake.

The serene lake comes alive during Onam with a spectacular water regatta-the snake boat races. It is indeed amazing to watch oarsmen, at least a hundred in one boat, slice their way through the waters to the rhythm of their own full throated singing.
